The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, fMHR, has reaffirmed the transformative role of sports in shaping responsible, disciplined, and united young citizens during his participation as Chairman of the Occasion at the 48th Annual Inter-House Athletic Competition of Federal Government College, Ijanikin held on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The colourful sporting event brought together school administrators, teaching and non-teaching staff, parents, alumni, invited dignitaries, and students in a vibrant celebration of athletic excellence, teamwork, and youthful energy.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Hunpe described Federal Government College, Ijanikin as a pride of the Badagry Division and one of Nigeria’s foremost Unity Schools known for academic distinction, leadership grooming, and character development.
He commended the institution for maintaining high standards in both academics and extracurricular activities, noting that the school continues to produce individuals who contribute meaningfully to national development across diverse professional fields.
According to the Chairman, educational institutions must go beyond classroom learning by creating platforms that nurture well-rounded individuals capable of leadership, innovation, and responsible citizenship.

Emphasizing the broader impact of sporting activities, Hon. Hunpe noted that sports remain one of the most effective instruments for youth engagement and social development.

Reaffirming his dedication to youth empowerment, Hon. Hunpe highlighted his longstanding personal investment in grassroots sports development within Badagry Local Government.
For over six years, he has consistently organized community-based table tennis competitions aimed at discovering emerging talents, fostering unity, and encouraging healthy lifestyles among young people.
He noted that his acceptance of the Chairmanship of the occasion also presented an opportunity to understudy the institution’s sports organization framework, with the intention of adapting and strengthening similar youth-focused initiatives across Badagry communities.
Personal Connection and Philanthropic Support
In a touching moment during his remarks, the Chairman shared his personal connection with the institution, revealing that his daughter is an alumnus of the college who belonged to Moremi House and has since progressed to become a professional nurse.
In recognition of the school’s positive influence on their family, Hon. Hunpe disclosed that his daughter and her siblings donated the sum of ₦1,000,000 to support the institution’s development efforts. Additionally, she personally contributed ₦250,000 to Moremi House to provide refreshments for participating students during the competition.
The gesture was widely applauded as a demonstration of gratitude, alumni responsibility, and continued commitment to educational advancement.

In his address, the Director-Principal, Dr. Famuyibo Tokunbo, emphasized that the Inter-House Athletic Competition represents far more than a contest for medals and trophies.
