In a powerful demonstration of faith, unity, and moral reflection, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, fMHR, hosted the Annual Ramadan Lecture organized by the Unified Local Government Muslim Staff Association, Badagry Local Government Branch, at the Council Secretariat. The spiritually enriching gathering brought together religious scholars, political leaders, community stakeholders, and members of the Muslim community to reflect on the significance of Ramadan and the role of faith in fostering a peaceful and progressive society.
The lecture, themed โFrom Submission to Excellence: The Journey of a Rising Muslim,โ served as a moment of deep reflection and spiritual renewal, encouraging participants to strengthen their commitment to the core values of Islam – faith, discipline, humility, compassion, and service to humanity.

In his keynote remarks, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe described Ramadan as more than a period of fasting, emphasizing that it represents a sacred season of self-discipline, reflection, and spiritual transformation. According to him, the holy month offers believers a unique opportunity to reassess their lives, renew their commitment to righteousness, and strengthen their relationship with God.
He urged residents of Badagry to allow the teachings and values of Ramadan to influence their everyday conduct beyond the fasting period.
โRamadan teaches us patience, humility, compassion, and self-control. These values must not end with the month of fasting. They should guide our interactions with one another and shape the way we build our communities,โ he stated.
Hon. Hunpe further encouraged Muslims and non-Muslims alike to embrace the principles of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and mutual respect, stressing that societal progress can only be achieved when people live together in harmony regardless of religious differences.
A Call for Religious Harmony and Unity
The council chairman also highlighted the symbolic significance of Ramadan coinciding with the Christian Lenten season this year, describing it as a powerful reminder of the shared spiritual foundations that unite humanity.
He noted that both religious traditions emphasize sacrifice, repentance, love, and devotion to God, which should inspire greater understanding and cooperation among people of different faiths.
According to him, this coincidence presents a profound opportunity for both Muslims and Christians to promote unity, empathy, and collective responsibility in building a peaceful society.
โIt is not a coincidence that Ramadan and Lent began around the same time this year. It is a divine reminder that God loves humanity and desires harmony among His creation. We must therefore use this period to strengthen the bonds that unite us,โ he said.
Hon. Hunpe reaffirmed his administrationโs commitment to initiatives that promote religious tolerance, moral development, and community cohesion, noting that faith-based gatherings such as the Ramadan lecture play an important role in shaping ethical leadership and responsible citizenship.
Scholarly Insights on the Journey of a Rising Muslim
Delivering the guest lecture, Dr. Mustapha Adebayo Bello, Senior Lecturer in Islamic (Cultural) Studies at the Department of Religion and Peace Studies, Lagos State University, offered profound insights into the spiritual theme of the event.
Speaking on โFrom Submission to Excellence: The Journey of a Rising Muslim,โ Dr. Bello emphasized that true excellence in Islam is not measured by outward displays of religiosity but by sincerity of intention, strength of character, and positive contributions to society.
He explained that the journey of a rising Muslim begins with genuine submission to the will of God and is sustained through continuous personal growth, knowledge acquisition, and moral discipline.
According to him, in an increasingly complex modern society, Muslims must embody values that reflect the true teachings of Islam – integrity, compassion, knowledge, and service to humanity.
โThe strength of a Muslim today lies in unwavering faith, sound character, knowledge, discipline, and a commitment to community development,โ he stated.
Dr. Bello also stressed the importance of sincerity in faith, noting that having good intentions is more meaningful than publicly displaying them. He encouraged believers to cultivate humility and focus on genuine acts of worship and kindness.
Promoting Compassion and Empathy in Society
The respected scholar also called on Muslims to develop a spirit of empathy and compassion toward others, emphasizing that Islam encourages believers to stand with people both in moments of joy and in times of hardship.
He reminded participants that the essence of the faith lies in promoting peace and compassion, urging them to avoid actions capable of creating division or unrest within society.
Dr. Bello further advised Muslims to respect constituted authority and demonstrate responsible citizenship, regardless of personal feelings or political differences.
โIslam teaches peace, discipline, and responsibility. A true believer must be known for good character, wisdom, and actions that promote stability and harmony in society,โ he added.
Choosing Forgiveness Over Hatred
In a message that resonated strongly with attendees, Dr. Bello highlighted the spiritual virtues of piety, sincerity, and God-consciousness, explaining that these qualities are the foundation of meaningful worship and righteous living.
He urged believers to reject hatred and bitterness, encouraging them instead to hate wrongdoing but show compassion toward those who err.
According to him, forgiveness remains one of the most powerful virtues in Islam and a necessary ingredient for peaceful coexistence within communities.
โPrefer forgiveness over revenge. Love people for the sake of God and view humanity through the lens of divine compassion,โ he advised.
