Hunpe charges Badagry legislators on citizen engagement
The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, fMHR, has charged members of the 8th Legislative Council to sustain meaningful engagement with residents and continually raise the standard of grassroots representation.
Hon. Hunpe gave the charge on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at a Legislative Symposium organised by the Badagry Local Government Legislative Council at the Council Secretariat, Ajara, with the theme: β€œRole of the Legislative Council in Grassroots Development and Democratic Governance.”
The Chairman, who attended the event alongside his wife, Chief Mrs. Elizabeth Oluwatoyin Hunpe and Vice-Chairman, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi drew from his experience as a former legislator to commend the Legislative Council for the initiative and emphasise the importance of responsive and people-centred representation.
He urged the councillors to remain close to their constituents, listen to their concerns and ensure that community needs inform their legislative interventions, stressing that effective representation requires consistent engagement with the people.
In his welcome address, the Leader of the House, Hon. Bankole Mautin Asokere said the symposium conceived during the 7th Legislative Council and sustained by the current council was designed to deepen understanding of grassroots representation, democratic governance and the responsibilities of councillors.
He noted that the responsibilities of councillors extend beyond plenary sessions and the making of bye-laws to include effective representation, oversight, accountability, consultation and responsive legislation.
Delivering the keynote address, Professor Thovoethin Paul Sewa, Professor of Political Science, Lagos State University, highlighted the importance of effective representation and legislative oversight, urging councillors to discharge their responsibilities with fairness, transparency and accountability.
In his vote of thanks, the Deputy Leader of the House, Hon. Pedekun Mathew Gbetogo appreciated the guest speaker, the Executive Chairman, members of the 7th and 8th Legislative Councils, management staff and other stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the programme.
